Girls Defeat Somerville in Round 1
Kirnon Keys 40-26 Triumph
Fears stirring and the visitors surging, Everett High’s Maya Krinon put minds at ease and the Crimson Tide into the Greater Boston League semifinals. The senior scored 10 consecutive points at the start of the fourth quarter, propelling EHS to a 40-26 triumph over visiting Somerville on Wednesday, March 31.
The spurt came at just the right moment. Somerville, which trailed by 11 points at halftime, cut the margin to four points after three quarters, 22-19, as Everett’s offense lulled.
Enter Kirnon. By far the most dominant force in the game, she scored two coast-to-coast layups as part of her 10-point outburst, quelling any hopes the Highlanders had of completing the comeback. By the midway mark of the final frame, the Crimson Tide’s lead was back up to 12 points.
When a putback by Ashley Cordeiro upped the lead to 38-22, Everett’s place in Thursday’s semifinal was assured.
In addition to Kirnon’s dynamic play, Everett received balanced contributions from everyone who played. Ashley Fitzgerald contributed six points and was a force on the defense. Coredeiro added five points, and Kaley Rossi had four. Andrea Manley (2) and Jane Odiari (2) rounded out the scoring for the visitors.
